The Best Gift List for Teachers – holiday edition
Are you stuck not knowing what gift your child (or you) should give your child’s teacher this year? Are you worried that you’ll gift something your teacher hates or doesn’t need? No worries, I’ve got you covered. Just follow my tips for easy gift-giving ideas for the teachers in your life!
Gift giving is not just for Elementary Teachers.
Teachers, yes ALL Teachers, love being remembered during the holidays and not just elementary school teachers. Trust me, as kids get bigger, the gifts occur less and less frequently. NO teacher goes into the profession for gifts, let’s be real. But, who doesn’t like to be remembered or be on the receiving end of a thoughtful gesture?
So, keep those teachers (and staff members) in mind who aren’t necessarily K-5 teachers. How about your child’s art, music, or physical education teacher? Be sure to show them some love! And, don’t forget about middle and high school teachers. They love to be remembered, too!

Keep it simple.
Gifts don’t have to = stuff.
Most teachers will tell you that the best gifts they have ever received are letters or cards from the heart. It is true for me! Help your child make a card or write a letter. If you have a teen or older child who just can’t do it because teens can be funny about things like that, why not write one yourself? If a specific teacher has really struck a chord with your child or has helped them in some special way, consider writing a personal hand-written note to let them know. Along those lines, send a note to the principal or the superintendent about how great he/she is! Who wouldn’t greatly appreciate that? For many people, recognition and gratitude are the best gifts to receive!
You really can’t go wrong here. Who doesn’t love a gift card? To make it a bit more special, why not get a little more personal and investigate a teensy bit into your teacher’s life. Simply by asking another teacher at school or someone else connected to the school, like the main secretary, you may be able to anonymously discover teacher’s favorites.
Here are some specific ideas:
- Your teacher’s preferred BEAUTY SALON or BARBER SHOP
- GROCERY STORE
- GAS STATION – especially for a commuter.
- CRAFT STORE
- CLOTHING STORE -Which is his/her favorite? I LOVE T.J. Maxx and Kohl’s is pretty cool too! Or, why not gift them a certificate to someplace new? I just love this cute website Peace Love World.
- MOVIE THEATER
- BOOK STORE
- HOME IMPROVEMENT STORE – has your teacher recently bought a home? They would adore this gift certificate!
- COOKS OR BAKERS? Why not gift them a gift certificate to a local (or on-line) cooking specialty shop? My two loves, Pampered Chef OR Penzeys spices.
I think you will find all it takes to personalize a standard gift card into something really meaningful is a small amount of inquiry on your part!
Target and Amazon are favorites for everyone! Amazon has a really neat feature allowing customers to create e-gift cards on demand starting at just $1.00! They are seriously the easiest gift cards EVER!
Okay, be careful here. During the holidays teachers are often inundated with extra treats galore. You might need to get a little creative to make it more personal and appropriate.
Does your teacher have a favorite drink or treat he or she loves, coffee, tea, or other beloved beverage? Why not gift them a special little surprise one day? It really does’t have to be much. I stand by this statement time and time again, “It’s the thought that counts!”
Does your child’s teacher have a food sensitivity or allergy? One thought is to find something special just for them. Very often the holidays are challenging for someone on a specialized diet so a food allergy approved treat would truly be appreciated. I’d stick with a commercially purchased item as homemade treats for those with food allergies can be tricky.
Does your school or teacher have a wish list readily available? If so, please consider taking advantage of that. Teachers really do love receiving teaching supplies as gifts because that means they don’t have to spend their own money on them! Let’s be real here, teachers aren’t exactly the best paid bunch of super educated professionals. Any extra supply you can gift them is absolutely appreciated.
Is your teacher having a baby or getting married? Or, were they married/had a baby recently? Sometimes gift registries are found in a few short clicks on the keyboard. A gift from a registry is a double score because you will be able to find something you know they want/need AND they will be so impressed with your attention to detail.
Keep it Simple Part 2
I know I said it before, however, don’t stress out by feeling like you have to create some Pinterest perfect item for the teachers in your life. Seriously, they do not care. No teacher is qualifying you or your child as “better” for gifting something that took you 10 hours to create. Keep it simple!
What to skip?
Ornaments and seasonal decor are nice for the brand new teacher. But, teachers who have been in the profession for several years or longer will likely have received DOZENS (if not more) of these holiday trinkets. Smelly candles, perfumes, and other personal items might also be on the “no” list unless you know for sure your teacher happens to LOVE a specific item.
